If your household is anything like mine, you’ll end up throwing a sack full of orange peels in the garbage every week.
My children eat a lot of oranges, and I regularly use lemons when cooking, resulting in so much citrus peel that I began to wonder if there wasn’t something else it could be put towards.
The subsequent quest for knowledge took me to the same place it always does: the internet. And there, amongst the infinite library of nonsensical videos and ‘life hack articles’, I found what I was looking for. If you’re someone who also goes through a lot of orange and lemon peel each week then keep reading, and you might just learn something extremely helpful…
Citrus fruits are versatile, and not only good for making juice and attracting wasps in the summer. No, it turns out that the peels of oranges and lemons and the like can also be used as a cheap, yet key ingredient in a super effective, homemade cleaning solution.
All you need for said solution is orange and lemon peels and a bottle of vinegar. Follow these simple steps to create a mixture that’s great at fighting grime, as well as being fantastically fragrant:
1: Save your citrus peels until you have enough to half fill a moderately-sized container.
2: Fill your container – be it a bottle or jar – halfway with the peels.
3: Pour vinegar into the container, making sure you completely cover the peels.
4: Let the mixture sit for a week or two so that the peels and vinegar infuse, helping to release the natural oils in the former.
5: When you’re ready, grab a strainer and use it to rid yourself of the peels.
Once the above steps have been followed, you should be left with a citrus-based cleaning solution that can be applied to various areas of your home including the kitchen (yes, your new cleaning liquid will tackle grease and grime handily), your bathroom, as well as windows and mirrors.
Don’t believe us? Give it a try and see for yourself. Not only does the mixture promise to do away with dirt and grime, but it also smells nice!
